Louisiana Spirits Distillery
It’s impossible to tell the story of south Louisiana without mentioning the massive sugar plantations that made the region so famous. The big houses along River Road? Sugar plantations, all. So it’s no surprise that Louisiana Spirits, a new distillery located in Lacassine and makers of Bayou Rum, owes a lot of its success to the famous Louisiana sugar cane that it grows on site.
Although Louisiana Spirits is still new (it opened in 2013), the company has made a big impression. For starters, in a little over year since it began bottling rum, the distillery won 50 awards from tasting competitions in the country. Louisiana Spirits has grown to become the largest privately owned rum distillery in the United States.
The company offers tours that allow visitors an up-close look at the distilling process from start to finish. Experience the scent of Louisiana sugar cane and molasses while listening to expert guides tell the story of the rum-making process. After your tour, visit the tasting bar and gift shop.
Before leaving, be sure to pick up some rum to take home. Bayou Rum comes in six varieties. Choose from the traditional Bayou White, Bayou Spiced, Bayou Reserve, Bayou Single Barrel, Bayou XO Mardi Gras and Bayou Pink, distilled from Louisiana’s locally grown sugarcane.
