Cajun Spirits Distillery

Kenneth (Gus) Haik, a born and raised New Orleanian, founded Cajun Spirits Distillery after discovering his love for distilling in the unlikeliest of locations: the ocean.

After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 2002, Haik shipped out to sea. An engineer by training, he was responsible for making seawater potable for a crew of 225 sailors. The science and skill that went into the process had a lasting effect on Haik, who would turn his love of working with water into wholly different career.

Haik developed his expertise in distilling at another business before founding his own in 2010, with the lofty goal of starting what Cajun Spirits Distillery’s website calls “a new spirits tradition for New Orleans.”

All of Cajun Spirits Distillery’s rum, vodka and gin begin with two ingredients: Louisiana sugarcane and hyper-purified water. Its Tresillo Rum is double charcoal filtered, with flavors of vanilla and caramel. Crescent Vodka is distilled effectively 34 times, resulting in a smooth, clean flavor. And Cajun Spirits Distillery’s 3rd Ward Gin, named for the industrial section of New Orleans where the distillery is located, is rich with the flavors of botanicals.

Crescent Vodka and 3rd Ward Gin especially have been creating a buzz far beyond New Orleans, winning medals at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the 11th annual American Distilling Institute Judging of Craft Spirits Competition.

You can taste Cajun Spirits Distillery’s gin, rum and vodka for yourself following a tour of the distillery. Tours are offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and last approximately an hour. Tours can be reserved via Cajun Spirits Distillery’s website.
